Winter Layering- The Rules & Pieces You Need

By  |  6 Comments

I’ve always been a big fan of layering. I find that in the winter especially, it’s a great way to achieve the perfect amount of warmth. If you get too warm when browsing in & out of shops you can easily remove a layer or two so you’re not sweltering, and you don’t get stuck carrying around a big coat.

Unfortunately layering is a major fear for many as it can result in looking more voluminous than you actually are. I agree, it makes sense, more clothes=more bulge, if you do it correctly, this isn’t the case.

“A perfectly layered look will compliment your curves and create the illusion of a more proportional silhouette.”

Lauren Conrad

This winter there are plenty of different ways to layer your outfits to create some truly on-trend looks while keeping cosy too, of course. Whether you prefer light layers or heavy statement, the choices you have when it comes to creating a layered outfit are endless.

Layering also ensures that you capitalise fully on all the clothes in your wardrobe as some clothes that may not be suitable this winter season can work when layering. Score.

The Rules:

  • The under/bottom layers should be light & fitted. This will help ensure your slim shape. Keep the bulky for later.
  • If you feel big, add a belt over the top layer. It will emphasize your waist.

  • Always keep length & proportion in mind. Different length tops/shirts and sweaters will show your different layers.
  • Play with texture. The use of similar fabrics will come off as heavy, which will add the appearance of weight. This also leads to certain details getting lost in the fold. Little trimmings such as lace, ruffles or faux fur grabs attention & can help distinguish the different layers so it doesn’t look like one big bulky mess.
  • If the outfit gets too billowy, add some structure with a cropped jacket. A denim, leather or moto jacket under an overcoat can aid this.
