The DOs & DON’Ts of Dark Lipstick

It’s that time of year again, we’ve bid farewell to the bright and bold lip colours and re-embraced the darker A/W colours. There was such a good response to my “Must-Have Lip Colours for A/W 2013” post that I thought it best to inform you all of the DO’s and DON’Ts or wearing Dark Lipstick.

Much like red lipstick, women often think they can’t wear a richly pigmented lip, but as long as you know what you’re doing dark lipstick can look extremely classy and more often than not timeless. And it always makes your teeth appear whitener, giving you a brighter smile also 😉

  • DO prepare your lips correctly. If possible exfoliate using a lip scrub and also apply some  moisturising lip-balm or primer. It’s extremely important to do this as it will enable the color to go on smooth and last longer.

Lush do a great range of lip scrubs for around €6.75/£5.50.

  • DON’T apply dark lipstick on dry, chapped lips. The color will crack and flake off which doesn’t like good at all, at all. Wait until your poor lips heal. Trying to cover them up won’t work it will only highlight them even more.
  • DO use a lip liner in a similar colour to your lipstick first. This provides a guideline for the perfect application of your lipstick and it also helps to hold the colour in place.
  • DON’T apply lipstick straight to the lips without using a brush. It takes longer but it will result in less mistakes and you can also control the intensity.

This L29 from blank canvas cosmetics is a steal at only €7.01.

  • DO clean up any flaws/mistakes that we all make and perfect the edges of your lip line with concealer for a professional finish. Dark lips are dramatic, but not with unnecessary smears.
  • DON’T forget about your eyes. While a dark lip for most means not having to do anything else as you’re always making a statement- defined brows, clean subtle liner and curled lashes with lashings of mascara is every dark lips’ best friend.

Love the winged liner and plum lip!

  • DO add a little color to the cheeks to brighten up the face.
  • DON’T forget to do a teeth check! The one down side of wearing dark lips!

  • DO pick a shade you love that will give you a confidence boost and a kick in your step :)

Hope you all find this useful!

Stay beautiful,
